Essex: Stansted Mountfitchet, a town and country trail
Explore this historic market town before venturing out into the peaceful countryside to enjoy scenic views across a nature reserve and Stansted Park
The church of St Mary the Virgin is set in a peaceful spot just south of Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex. The church features a wealth of historic features including carved Norman arches, a medieval effigy and the wasp-waisted tomb of Hester Salusbury, who was tragically alleged to have been killed by a stag in Stansted Park while hunting in 1614.
A short walk along footpaths brings you into the town centre, with its plentiful cafes and pubs. Explore some of the other heritage attractions in the area, such as the Castle or Toy Museum, or head straight out into the country, heading north to the Aubrey Buxton Nature Reserve before circling back through the picturesque scenery of Stansted Park.
There is an opportunity to combine this walk with an overnight stay in this special historic building. Find out more about Champing at St Mary's here.
