Essex: Willingale, a Tale of Two Churches in one Churchyard
Explore the two beautiful churches of historic Willingale before a tranquil walk through fields to Fyfield and back.
Willingale is highly unusual in having two medieval churches sharing the same churchyard, with the long distance Essex Way footpath passing between them.
St Andrew’s is in the care of the CCT and is rich in history, featuring fascinating medieval graffiti in the chancel, depicting bishops and crossbows. It was also the parish church for airmen based at a nearby airfield during the Second World War and you can find out more about this connection through an exhibition of photos and records at the back of the church.
This circular route through flat arable land takes in a third church at Fyfield. A couple of benches near the church and bridge at this half-way point offer an opportunity to rest and refreshments are available from the Queen’s Head or post office in Fyfield, or the Black Bull as you leave the village.
This 8km / 5 mile walk take approximately two hours and is correct as of date of publication. Please let us know if you experience any difficulties.
